San Pedro CA

San Pedro CA is an interesting community with a strong seafaring heritage. The first people to live here, the Tongva Indians, were accomplished at ocean canoeing, and the region was used by Spanish ships as early as the 1540s. In fact, San Pedro CA got its name from its Spanish colonizers who discovered the port on the feast day of San Pedro. The community was an independent city until 1909, when it was absorbed into Los Angeles. From the 1920s to the 1940s, San Pedro CA was the home of a significant portion of the US Navy’s Pacific fleet. Today, most of the ocean-related activities—especially commercial ones—have ceased in San Pedro and the community is mainly residential.
